Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) announced plans for a hydrogen innovation centre at the Tamil Nadu Investors Conclave 2024 in Chennai. Developed in partnership with IIT Madras and Guidance Tamil Nadu, supported by the state government, the centre aims to advance hydrogen technology and mobility, with operations expected by 2026.

The announcement was made during the Tamil Nadu Investors Conclave 2024 in Chennai.
The initiative is supported by the State Government of Tamil Nadu.
Virtual Groundbreaking Ceremony:
Conducted by Thiru M. K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Attended by Dr. T R B Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion & Commerce, and other senior state government officials and representatives from Hyundai and IIT Madras.
Objective:
The centre aims to accelerate the development and adoption of hydrogen technology in Tamil Nadu and across India.
The initiative aligns with HMIL’s goal of making Tamil Nadu a hub of automotive innovation and promoting advancements in alternative fuels.
Environmental Impact and Workforce Development:
The centre will contribute to reducing Tamil Nadu’s carbon footprint.
It will also play a crucial role in developing a skilled workforce for the emerging hydrogen economy.
Investment and Infrastructure:
HMIL will invest INR 100 Crores in the construction of the facility.
The centre will be located within the IIT Madras, Thaiyur campus, covering 65,000 sq. ft.
Facilities and Focus Areas:
Electrolyzer Test Rig: Development of electrolyzers for green hydrogen generation.
Electrolyzer / Fuel Cell Fabrication Line: Localization of manufacturing and supply chain.
Fuel Cell Test Station: Testing and research on fuel cells.
Digital Twin for Hydrogen Infrastructure: Operational and diagnostic tool for hydrogen systems.
Pilot Demonstrators: Using electrolyzers and fuel cells for practical applications.
Hydrogen Refuelling Station: Research and development in hydrogen mobility.
Projected Operational Date:
The hydrogen innovation centre is expected to be operational by 2026.
