The MoU, signed in the presence of GAIL’s CMD Sandeep Kumar Gupta and VERBIO Group’s CEO Claus Sauter, aims to promote sustainable energy solutions and enhance agricultural waste utilization in India.
In a move to bolster India’s clean energy landscape, GAIL (India) Limited and VERBIO India Private Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the establishment of compressed biogas (CBG) plants utilizing agricultural residue. The MoU, signed in the presence of GAIL’s CMD Sandeep Kumar Gupta and VERBIO Group’s CEO Claus Sauter, aims to promote sustainable energy solutions and enhance agricultural waste utilization in India.
The MoU, signed by Sumit Kishore, GAIL’s Executive Director (Business Development and E&P), and Ashish Kumar, MD of VERBIO India, outlines plans to identify suitable locations for greenfield CBG plants and conduct feasibility studies. The outcome of these studies will determine the next steps, including forming a joint venture and securing investment approvals from both companies. Additionally, GAIL may consider acquiring equity in VERBIO’s existing CBG plant in Punjab.
“This MoU with VERBIO marks a significant step in our commitment to advancing clean energy in India,” said Sandeep Kumar Gupta, CMD, GAIL. “By harnessing agricultural residues for CBG production, we aim to contribute to the nation’s energy security and sustainability goals. This initiative will provide renewable energy while supporting local farmers by utilizing agricultural waste, thereby enhancing their income and livelihood.”
Claus Sauter, CEO, VERBIO Group, added, “We are pleased to partner with GAIL to jointly deploy bioenergy as a solution for stubble burning in India. This collaboration aligns with our vision of promoting CBG while supporting farmers and the rural economy. With GAIL as a strong partner, VERBIO will be able to replicate the success of our CBG project in Punjab across India. By leveraging agricultural residues, we will generate clean energy and contribute to reducing GHG emissions.”
